How to Choose Aluminium Windows for Your Home: A Complete Guide

Buying GuidePublished 10 January 2026By BDF Architectural

Aluminium windows have experienced a dramatic resurgence in UK architecture. Once associated only with commercial buildings, modern thermally broken aluminium windows are now a premium choice for residential properties, offering outstanding durability, slim sightlines, and a contemporary aesthetic that timber and uPVC cannot match.

Types of Aluminium Windows

  • Casement windows — hinged at the side, opening outward; the most common window type in the UK
  • Tilt and turn windows — open inward for ventilation or tilt for secure night ventilation; popular in Europe and growing in UK
  • Fixed light windows — non-opening, purely for light; often combined with opening sections
  • Sliding sash windows — traditional vertical sliding action in an aluminium frame; growing popularity for heritage-style properties
  • Awning windows — hinged at the top, opening outward from the bottom; good for ventilation in rain

Why Choose Aluminium Over uPVC?

Aluminium offers significantly slimmer frame profiles than uPVC, which means more glass area and more natural light. Aluminium frames are stronger, allowing larger pane sizes and more design flexibility. They do not warp, discolour, or deteriorate over time. The powder-coated finish is available in virtually any colour and will not fade.

Understanding U-Values and Energy Efficiency

U-value measures how well a window retains heat — the lower the number, the better. UK Building Regulations require windows to achieve a U-value of no more than 1.4 W/m²K for replacements. Modern aluminium windows with thermally broken frames and double glazing typically achieve 1.1–1.4 W/m²K. With triple glazing, U-values of 0.7 W/m²K or better are achievable.

Security Considerations

Aluminium windows can be specified to PAS 24 enhanced security standard, which is now required for all replacement windows in new builds and some extensions. Multi-point locking, internally beaded glazing, and high-security hardware are all available. Always confirm the security specification when getting quotes.

Colour Options

One of the biggest advantages of aluminium windows is the colour range. Standard colours like anthracite grey (RAL 7016), white (RAL 9010), black (RAL 9005), and dual-colour options (different colours inside and outside) are all available. Any RAL colour can be specified for a truly bespoke result.
